The collection system, for which international patents have been lodged, enables urine harvesting in a
manner that is considerably more humane than practiced by current producers overseas. Extensive equine
trials have received very successful test results,' Mr Vella said.
The success of The Animal Equine Welfare Trials (under the control of Victorian Government Authorities)
have been welcomed by animal welfare society groups. There is now a proven alternative to capturing PMU
than currently used overseas. Mares are able to wander freely in their pastures whilst wearing the collection device and still allow PMU collection to occur.
The concept of PMU farming is new to Australia and, with worldwide demand for natural estrogens increasing,
this new and exciting equine agriculture industry will provide excellent returns to horse farmers.
